The atmosphere of Ateljé A-M, with all the wonderful paintings and artworks, have been very inspiring for me, writing short stories and essays. The cozy kitchen with the view around was also a favourite writing place. I have spent a lot of time outside in the nature and – coming from a busy
town – especially liked the white and silent winter landscape.
The writing workshop I could hold with the women from the book club was an absolute highlight for me. So many good stories written in a few hours, such a good time we spent together. I like to get in contact with people in and around the village and therefore I am very happy, that this was made
possible by you, Ann-Marie.
Expectations vs. experience
Compare your expectations before you went to the residency to the actual (creative, physical, emotional etc.) experience. How realistic were your plans and expectations?
Every time I walked around in the Ateljé without a special plan of writing, I was surprised about this inspiring place and lots of ideas popping up. So, I sat down and my pen started to run over the paper. So much winter – I didn´t expect it and I really liked it!
Affect
Did this period of working in this residency affect your project, your work in general or your life as an artist/researcher/writer/musician/?
The exchange with other artists is helpful and inspiring for me. Feels like being part of a community, sharing the same dreams and trying to find enough room in the daily life for creative activities. This is encouraging. I wrote more than at home and about new topics.I really appreciated the warm welcome from you Ann-Marie and your family and I liked also the
varied topics we discussed where I got new insights. Thanks also for talking Swedish patiently with me, it allowed me to improve my language skills, which opens for me a better way of discovering your country, it´s people and the place I am visiting.
Improvement
Did you lack anything? Do you have suggestions to what and how I can improve the residency in any
way?
Everything perfect
Conclusion
Please conclude with few words of wisdom/advice. For ex. did you learn something from this experience; if you could go back in time, would you do things differently; was this an extremely
personal experience or you can relate it to the bigger picture etc.
With my writing colleagues in Vienna, we keep talking about the author Virginia Woolf and her famous essay ”A Room of One’s Own”. About hundred years ago she wrote there, that a woman must have money and a room of her own if she is to write. We all are searching this room of one´s own and I have found it here – that´s why I came back to Ateljé A-M a second time.
A big Thanks to you, Ann-Marie.

The Residences is a cozy and lovely place. It has everything you need to live and create. Lots of different equipment and a big bright room. There is an amazing energy of peace and inspiration in this house. In general, this place is ideal for connoisseurs of quiet and peaceful life surrounded by nature.

There are wonderful views of the river and the field, woods and fields where sheep graze. This is a very picturesque area.

There are bikes in the residence, I rode every day and enjoyed nature.

There is also a grocery store nearby, which is very convenient.

There was no public transportation during the summer, but Ann-Marie was kind enough to take me to the right place. She also gave tours to various wonderful places in the area. I honored myself as if I were visiting good friends.

Expectations vs. experience

Compare your expectations before you went to the residency to the actual (creative, physical, emotional etc.) experience. How realistic were your plans and expectations?

Staying in the residence exceeded all my expectations. It was as if I was born again in this place. To be honest, I was a little afraid that I would be very uncomfortable in the north because of the cold weather. But it wasn’t. I fell in love with the place.

Affect

Did this period of working in this residency affect your project, your work in general or your life as an artist/researcher/writer/musician/?

my residency has had a profound effect on my art and life in general. Surrounded by tranquility, I was able to free myself from the hustle and bustle of the city and take my art to a new level. In my opinion, my paintings are more fulfilling and harmonious.

I learned to be in the moment and just enjoy life noticing all its beauty without rushing and fussing.

“One of my challenges was to work in a different environment, trying to catch the essence of the place and thinking about how to synthesize general points of view during the four weeks of residence”.

Expectations vs. experience

Compare your expectations before you went to the residency to the actual (creative, physical, emotional etc.) experience. How realistic were your plans and expectations?

“Before going for first time to Sweden I wished to spend part of the time outside, not only painting but also analyzing the landscape to get a general picture of Örträsk in many ways. I thought it would be great to work close to the subjects and focus on the big spectrum of whites but I found this goal really hard, especially when the weather turned colder and windy. I decided to use small sizes for sketching quickly, making possible the aim of my proposal”.

Affect

Did (or how) this period of working in a residency affect your project, and maybe even your work in general as an artist/researcher/curator?

“I guess art residences are important not only for the professional career of the artist but also as an inflection point in a personal way. This new experience allowed me to get an idea of the kind of landscape we can find in Lapland, and how interesting can be to share knowledge with artists from different art universities and countries”.

“Thanks to this art residence I could discover a new environment and a totally different context where I usually work, being in contact for first time with an artist from Lithuania and inspiring my visual way of thinking. There is no doubt that sharing all kind of activities and meeting aspects of swedish culture helped me to keep interested about life in the north, not only in the present but also about its past history. I´m grateful to the teaching experience as well, because thanks to that I could meet by very first hand the benefits of art classrooms and comments and suggestions made by the teachers. I wish to go back someday with the aim of enjoy the amazing views of Örträsk in different seasons and hoping to meet next artists at ATELJÉ AM”.
