“I haven’t expected such a warm welcome and such a various weather. Everything went way better. Quiet place helped to concentrate on creativity.” (Comment from artist who stayed at the residency in 2017)
The setting for the artist residency is a silent, tranquil, beautiful ad welcoming countryside in the south of Swedish Lapland. Far from city sounds and instead closeness to birds chirping and rustles of leaves.
Ateljé A-M art residency is situated in a former chapel in the village of Örträsk. The village lies in Lapland also called the beautiful valley. It is about 45 minutes drive with car from Lycksele and one hour from Umeå. Due to the remote location of the residence, a car is recommended if you want to feel completely free and if you are in need of travelling around. There are two small grocery stores in Örträsk, one is 30 seconds walk from the residence, the other one lies on the other side of the lake. We can also provide transport once or twice a week to larger supermarkets. There is also a restaurant 10 km from the residency called Pärlan. In our village you can also find a sheep farm, Bränna gård, with a small shop that sells meat and sheepskin.
The Residence welcomes and offers artists the opportunity to develop his or her project within the following fields: Visual arts, literary arts, performing arts, research, scultpure, design and environmental art. If you are looking for a rural, inspiring place where you can test new ideas, develop your work and above all, find the tranquility you need to explore and develop your work, this place is the one for you.
Artists undertake Atejé A-M residency for an agreed period of time and will stay in one of the three rooms of an apartment – subject to availability. The work space will be made available in accordance with each artist’s project requirements. We provide one big studio, which can be divided into smaller spaces. We also have three smaller studios. There is a garden around the house where you can work during late spring, summer and fall. There are 9 hectares of the property’s forest available for different kind of initiatives.
The extraordinary beauty of the surroundings will provide a ground for creativity and professional development.
We have four different seasons which must be taken into consideration. Our Winter period from November to March has a temperature that varies between -5 and -25. However, there are a lot extra clothes available to borrow and the air is mostly dry and chrystal clear. There can also be very snowy weather and the snow stays from November to April.
The spring starts in April- May, short and intense with temperatures between -5 and +15. The summer with its 24 hours daylight from May to August and temeperature from +7 to +25 degrees is also rather short and intense. The fall with its colorful leaves starts in September and lasts until October. Our weather is frequently discussed in every day life, and we have a saying: “There is no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothing”.
Applications will be judged on the basis of CVs and portfolios submitted. Each project will be discussed individually.

About Ann-Marie Bäckström, the manager of the residency
Ann- Marie has had a dream to start an Art Residency for a long period of time and when she got the opportunity to buy the old chapel in Västra Örträsk she took a leap and decided that this will be the place for it. Örträsk can offer an amazing and rural, beautiful, inspiring place for artists to study, work and share their knowledge with local people and other artists.
She believes that each and every individual carries something very special inside and when people meet, something interesting happens and among other things, creativity arises. At a residence this creativity can spread and inspire, and this leads to a fresh and positive engagement and artistry, sparkling with originality among people.
Why in Örträsk? The nature of Northern Sweden is rare, it has four different seasons well worth sharing with the rest of the world. The village of Örträsk is beautifully situated around the deep lake. It is rural, silent and filled with so many amazing spots to discover. Örträsk is a place to discover and to explore the importance of the relationship between nature and human beings.
What is her education and former experiences? She has worked with agriculture, been running a taxi-company and worked as a teacher. Many years of experience from international school projects and last but not least worked her entire life with art and handicraft and truly enjoys inspiring others to creativity.
